Several people have been killed and wounded in a shooting attack on a shopping centre in Munich, German police told the AP news agency, adding that the perpetrators were still on the run.

A major police operation was under way on Friday around the Olympia shopping centre in the southern city, police said, urging Munich residents to stay off the streets.

“At 17.50 local time, reports came in about a shooting near Hanauer Street, which then progressed to Ries Street and the Olympia shopping mall,” police said in a statement on Facebook

The statement added that witnesses had reported three different shooters.

Police asked that no photographs or videos of their operations to be posted online, while Munich transport authorities said they had halted several bus, train and tram lines.

There was no information about the possible motives of the attack.
