Although war is not the option that anyone would prefer to take in conflict resolution, it is necessary to take stock of each country’s capabilities on the military end. Since both the US and Russia have hands reaching in and around the Syrian conflict, the strengths of these two should especially be noted. It would not be pleasant for anyone involved to see the two Cold War rivals raise arms, but in a hypothetical Russia vs USA war scenario, how much punch would each pack?
Here is a look at some of their most useful weapons.
Firstly, on the Russian side:
Amur-class Submarine
There are a few variants of this diesel-electric powered submarine; the Project 1650 Amur class has been designed for exportation to the likes of India and China. The sub is outfitted with modern electrical warfare systems, sonar that can detect silent targets within a wide range, and the capability to launch a salvo of 6 missiles toward targets at sea or at the shore.
P-800 Oniks Anti-Ship Missile/BrahMos Anti-Ship missile
This anti-ship missile – originally the Soviet developed P-800, later jointly developed into the Indian-Russian BrahMos – can be launched from land, sea, submarine, or air. It is primarily an anti-ship missile and has a range of 300 km (outdoing the US Navy Harpoon anti-ship missile.)
Sukhoi Su-35 Flanker-E
This fighter jet covers many basics of aircraft warfare, and it does so very well: It’s fast, capable of hitting and firing from speeds up to Mach 1.5; its altitude capability lets it go as high as 45,000 feet, and its three-dimensional thrust vectoring gives it great maneuverability. These characteristics make this aircraft a primary choice in air-to-air combat.

T-90 Tank
The cost-effective Russian T-90 battle tank is a like a heavily upgraded version of the T-72, a Soviet-era piece of machinery. It makes use of the reliable chassis of the T-72 but is outfitted with the more advanced turret and armaments system of the T-80. The tank’s defense also relies on its explosive reactive armor (ERA).

Type 53-65 Wake Homing Torpedo
Torpedoes are just as deadly as any airborne missile in naval warfare. The wake homing torpedo senses the trail of a ship by following its wake – sensing the ship’s churning as it makes its way, and snaking through the water for a direct hit. The best possible counter for a wake homing torpedo would be an anti-torpedo torpedo.
Now, the United States, being a military superpower itself, has some weapons worth mentioning if it ever the needs to engage or defend arise in a Russia vs USA war:
B-2 Stealth Bomber
Due to Russia’s more sophisticated anti-air weaponry of the modern day, the B-2 Stealth Bomber has become a particularly useful option. Its reduced infrared, acoustic, electromagnetic, visual and radar signatures make it harder to counter by any defensive means. Its large payload and high altitude capabilities make it formidable as well.
F-22 Raptor
The F-22 Raptor fighter jet was developed to replace the old F-15’s. These aircraft are stealthy, maneuverable, and yet capable of reaching speeds of up to Mach 1.5 – the design of a bird-of-prey meant to go for the quick, first kill. This aircraft is capable not just of air-to-air combat either; the Raptor can be used in missions of surveillance, reconnaissance and sabotage natures as well. The aircraft is meant to be superior to any other aircraft in a Russia vs USA war scenario, including the Su-35.
M1A2 Abrams Tank
The Abrams, much like their Russian T-90 counterparts, were put together from an older model of tank. These ones are now outfitted with a new turret, improved armor, and a nuclear-chemical-biological protection system. New systems like a thermal imaging gunner’s sight and driver’s integrated display are improved features.
Missile Defense
The US missile defense system is also an advanced and sophisticated collection of technologies. On the front of US homeland defense, there is NATO’s missile defense system and Ground-based Mid-Course System. Meanwhile abroad, the US took a “phased adaptive” approach to missile defense under Obama, making plans for a system in Europe in order to counter Iran’s ballistic missile capabilities. The US will also rely on Aegis BMD ships as a counter.
Ohio Class Ballistic Missile Submarine
The Ohio-class Ballistic Missile Submarine spends roughly 68% of its time in the water (the rest for maintenance), where it can travel over 25 knots and dive 800 feet deep. The sub is armed with MK48 torpedoes and Trident II D-5 Submarine Launched Ballistic Missiles. SSBN’s are designed for extended deterrent patrols: stealthy, and yet capable of delivering nuclear warheads.
