M7+ Earthquake Expected & Hurricane Irma-Hurricane Irma Is Now Larger Than Ohio, Setting Off Earthquake Seismometers

A magnitude 7 earthquake is expected to occur in the next three days. Swarm activity continues in Southern Idaho. Hurricane Irma is gaining strength.

US-bound Hurricane Irma has gotten so strong that it is showing up on equipment designed to measure earthquakes.

Stephen Hicks, a seismologist at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton, said seismometer recordings on Guadeloupe, an island group in the southern Caribbean Sea, show the now-Category 5 storm approaching the Lesser Antilles, another Caribbean island group.

“Seismometer recordings from the past 48 hours on Guadeloupe show Cat. 5 #Hurricane #Irma driving closer toward the Lesser Antilles,” Dr Hicks tweeted.

Florida, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands have declared states of emergency.

Rick Scott, the governor of Florida, has said Irma's exact path is unknown, but that the storm could affect “millions of Floridians”.

Because of Irma’s size and power, very dangerous weather could also occur up to 200 miles away from the eyewall, the most devastating region of a hurricane.

“The hurricane force winds in Irma are wider than Florida,” tweeted Bryan Norcross, hurricane specialist at the Weather Channel. “You won’t need a direct hit to get Wilma-type winds & storm surge on both coasts.”

As Florida and nearby states and territories prepare to be battered by Irma, Texas continues to reel from the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey in August.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has suggested repair costs could total $180bn. Donald Trump sent Congress a $7.9bn request for an initial down payment for Harvey relief and recovery efforts.

Meteorologist Warns Hurricane Irma a ‘Catastrophic Event’ for Florida

Hurricane Irma has the most powerful winds ever recorded for an Atlantic Ocean storm at 185 mph. The dangerous Category 5 hurricane is in the Caribbean and could hit Florida over the weekend.

The chief forecaster for WeatherBELL Analytics, Joe Bastardi, gave CBN News his predictions. He believes the storm will devastate the Virgin Islands and then give Puerto Rico "a bad storm," but not hit it directly.

Bastardi says the storm will continue into the Turks and Caicos Islands before ultimately hitting Florida.

"I do believe Florida is going to get hit, and it's going to be a catastrophic event where it hits," he predicted. "The easiest way out if you want to call it that with this hurricane is that after the Southern Bahamas, it goes west into Cuba, weakens for a while, then comes back north."

"If that's the case, we have a severe hurricane – no doubt about that – for south Florida," he continued. "If it just stays over the water and goes between Cuba and Florida before coming into Florida, this could be as bad a hurricane as we've ever seen hit south Florida."

"And in the worst case scenario, I could see the pressure in this – the barometric pressure – falling as low as the 1935 Labor Day hurricane, which brought winds of over 200 miles an hour to the Florida Keys," Bastardi said.

And in response to that possibility, the meteorologist has advice for people in the path of Hurricane Irma.

"Listen to whatever authorities on that matter have to say," Bastardi said. "...You prepare for the worst; pray for the best, and that's what I would do."
